I can’t speak for other people but I know if I don’t plan my meals and workouts, I might as well swim without a lifejacket. I plan my “cheat meals” so I don’t feel deprived. So to answer your question Jayson, for me, I gain weight/fat when I don’t plan my nutrition and exercise.

    Another great episode.

Keep up the great work with good content!

  2. Jacqueline Says:

How many calories do carrots contain (say per average sized carrot)? I sometimes eat 4-7 carrots in one sitting.

  3. Heather Says:

So Americans spend 5.2 billion on diet and weight loss foods in an ENTIRE year, yet spend 2 billion a year on Halloween candy alone!!! What do you mean why are we getting fatter???

  4. Jayson Says:

Roughly 25 calories for 1/2 cup of raw carrots.

  5. James Says:

The reason our nation is getting so fat is that we love to eat out, and there are very few good choices at most restaurants. Restaurant portions are way out of proportion. Also restaurants do not want to reveal how many calories are in the food they cook either; so most of us are left to guess at what we are sitting down to eat. Finally, we are all looking at ways to economize, and the economy meals at restaurants are some of the worst choices. Very few people cook at home any more because we are all in such a hurry. We need specific choices and guidelines for dieting voluntarily given by each restaurant.

    Hi Jason
I hear that if you boil water and add 2 tsp of honey and 1 tsp of cinnamon and drink it on a empty stomach in the morning and at night time before you go to bed that it will litterally eat away the fat and clean the arteries, it also stated that even the most obese person can eat regular food and still loose weight. Is this true? I tried it last night and this morning and noticed it truly does make you feel full and it kind of taste like tea.

  7. Jim Labadie Says:

I think Les brings up a great point. People, deep down, know they need to plan, but they hate to do it.

How do you get people to ENJOY planning for fat loss success?

  8. shelley Says:

Hello, there’s a couple reasons, one is we as americans are so on the go, no one’s ever home any more. and way to much techy stuff. back in the day you had to do much more things that required expendiure of energy now its all done for us. another big one is i feel all the chemicals and precessed food is sabotaging us. shelley

  9. Jayson Says:

What do they saw causes these results. It may help you feel full, but eating away fat and cleaning your arteries sound very much like a snake oil miracle potion. I wouldn’t buy into that too much.

  10. Penny Says:

Too much sugar…way too much sugar…in obvious treats like candy and also in so called healthy “lite” food products. On a recent family trip to the US I noticed how difficult it was to eat ( as a tourist ) and not have a sugar overload!

  11. Renato Says:

The tip on killing snack cravings was very good. Are there other dried fruits which you can recommend? Are
    raisins ok too?

Im 56 and play golf 4 x week without using a cart and it helps keep me within my weight. Would you know how many calories are burned in an 18 hole game?

    Thanks

  12. Cindy Says:

    Jason,

You mentioned that the dried plums had “sorbitol”. Could you explain what that is (it sounds like an artifical sweetner)and if it is a naturally occuring substance or an additive and maybe do a talk on artifical sweetners and possible better/ more natural options like stevia, Xylitol, agave etc. i would love to hear your thoughts on this subject. Also, I’m surprised that you said the subjects blood sugars were more stable with the plums as i would think that the concentrated sugars in the “dried” plums would skyrocket the blood sugar. Or is it that the high fibre content that slows that down?
Thanks and have a great day

  13. Jayson Says:

Here is the definition of sorbitol: Sorbitol, or glucitol as it is sometimes called, is a slow-metabolizing sugar alcohol derived from fruits, corn and seaweed. So it is a sugar alcohol like xylitol. According to the research study the blood sugars did not skyrocket because of the fiber content.

  14. Jayson Says:

Raisins would not be a great craving killer because they are high is simple sugars and do not contain a lot of fiber so your blood sugars will rise considerably with raisins. Calories burned during a round of golf would depend on the size of the person, is the course hilly, are you carrying your bag or using a push cart. So I can’t really put a number on it for you because of so many variables.

  15. annie Says:

Thank you for your snack attack video. This is what I have learned following you. Prunes are a great little fruit as they’re naturally free from all those baddies- fat, saturated fat and salt, contain 394mcg carotene per 100g and 148mcg of lutein & zeaxanthin.and are a natural source of (good for you) antioxidants. Prunes also contain no cholesterol. And that goes for prune juice too! Thank you for your suggestions.

  16. jon Says:

i alway hear about n have red about how coconut oil is the best oil to cook with for various reasons, but if u wana make a 3 whole egg omega 3 free range organic omelet which contains about around 15 grams of fat, if u use a tblsp of coco oil to cook with, it adds another 15 grams of fat over 100-200 calories. does the fat in the coco oil have to be added into total calories n how does the amount of fat in the oil effect the meal n calorie consumption etc.?????thanks

  17. Judy Says:

Hi Jason- I think we spend so much because of all the varying information and also much of the medical community isn’t any better educated.

  18. Jayson Says:

If you use oil that equals 15gms of fat and over 100 calories yes you should count those fat grams and calories as part of your daily calories.

  19. Fran Says:

People are spending tons of money on diet food – but when something is low in fat, it has to be high in something else – like perhaps sugar. People don’t realize it and think they have the freedom to eat as much as they want because it’s low in fat or fat free. And with this mindset, they just keep eating and buying and eating and buying and not losing any weight.

  20. Cheryl Rehfeld Says:

I think the reason billions of dollars are spent on diet books, exercise equipment, and health clubs is because people have good intentions to loose weight. First, they make the decision to loose weight, then buy diet books and join a health club. We stay dedicated for a about one month and then if we have not seen a significant result – we give up and quit. We think we should see a 10 – 20 lb result, an unrealistic goal, but that is what we want – instant gratification without doing much to achieve it. The end result – Americans just keep getting fatter. Somehow, we have to change that behavior and be satisified with a 2 – 5 lb loss per month.

  21. Darlene Says:

I need to know how to motivate my diabetic husband to lose weight. His attitude is I can eat whatever I want as long as I take my melformin but the weight keeps comeing and since finding out he is diabetic he thinks he can drink diet pop. Anything I say goes in one ear and out the other. He won’t discuss it. I know I can only change myself and I have lost 40 lbs this year. Can you help?

  22. Jayson Says:

If you really want to get through to him take him to a diabetic clinic to see the people that are blind as a result of eating whatever they want or talk to the people that have lost their toes or half their leg because they thought they could eat whatever they want as long as they took their medicine. The diabetic medication is to only help control your blood sugars. It doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want and the medicine will take care of it.

It sounds like he needs a reality check and see what life is like when you don’t watch what you eat and then you also get diabetes. During my dietetic internship I got to scrub in on some surgeries which was very neat, but the thing that grossed me out and practically made me sick was watching doctors take a knife and scrape black dead tissue form someone’s leg or foot. They would have to cut the black tissue off until they got to pink alive tissue. The smell of this tissue was horrendous!!

Let him see what his life will be like if he doesn’t start taking care of himself. Take him to a diabetic clinic in a hospital to see this or better yet if you have a Veterans Affairs hospital nearby take him there.
